Who we are

Spilled Milk is my ongoing archive of handwritten recipes, the old ones that find me, and the new ones people share in the moment. I work with recipe cards, typed pages, clipped notes, and anything someone once wrote down so they wouldn’t forget how to make something.

The archive has two parts: a historical collection gathered over many years, and a growing set of handwritten recipes from the people I cross paths with now. I’m interested in how these small pieces of paper hold memory, labor, and community. If you have a recipe or a collection you’d like to share, I’d be glad to include it.

I came to this work as an undergraduate English major studying writing, foodways, women’s domestic labor, and the kinds of everyday materials that often go unnoticed. What began as a hobby in my thirties as a fascination with old recipe cards, has grown into a long-term research project and the focus of my academic work in my fifties. Spilled Milk now connects my creative practice, archival study, and scholarship, and continues to shape the questions I ask about how we document the lives lived in kitchens.
